The no-fans PGA Tour circus rumbles north to Blaine, Minnesota for the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities. After two weeks at Muirfield Village with major-style fields, we have a drop off in the strength of the playing contingent in advance of the WGC next week and the PGA Championship after that. We do have Brooks, DJ and Tommy Fleetwood but the big names are few and far between. DJ is the current favourite which is surprising given his back-to-back 80’s at the Memorial last week. It looks like the top of the market can be ignored and in-form players further down need to examined. This is only the second year of this event, so course form is not as big a factor.
Harris English has been a model of consistency this season and is 26th in the FedEx Cup standings. This is on the back of five top-10 finishes and three other top-20 finishes which included a t-13th at the Memorial last week. That was an impressive return to form for English as he had tested positive for Covid-19 only a few weeks ago. His game and attitude are in a great place and this is the sort of event that he can capitalise on.
Max Homa was a player in serious form before the pandemic caused a hitch in his stride. He hasn’t quite been the same player since the return but he is twice the price he would have been a few months ago. This is too hard to ignore for a player who was so impressive only four short months ago. This week’s event can demonstrate that he still has the ability to win on the PGA Tour.
Charley Hoffman was a man somewhat adrift earlier in the season, but his quality is beginning to re-emerge. His top-10 at the Workday showed that he still has the competitive ability and desire and this course could witness one of his fast starts. So, he is also a good bet for first-round leader.
Sam Ryder also returned to form with top-10 at the Workday two weeks ago. Ryder also twice shot 66 at the 3M Open last year, so he has course form to bolster his claims. He has shot low rounds in PGA Tour events before and is shaping like a player ready to win.
The outsider selections for this week are Joseph Bramlett and Roger Sloan. Bramlett has shown that he has form with a couple of eye-catching top-3 finishes on the Korn Ferry Tour and this event has a number of Korn Ferry players. He is capable of winning at this level. Meanwhile, Sloan had a solid top-30 finish at the Workday and was tied-15th here last year with four rounds in the 60’s.
