We are back at the same venue of Muirfield Village this week for the prestigious Memorial Tournament. In what should have been the week of the Open, we have a field assembled that would grace any major championship. Tiger makes his first start since the pandemic break and is joined on the top of the bill by Rory, Brooks and the beefy Bryson. DeChambeau will go off as favourite this given his dominant performance at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, but JT and Rory are not too far behind. Selections for this week will focus on value and have previous Memorial form and Open Championship pedigree.
The headline selection for this week is World Number One, Rory McIlroy. This might not be the most original pick, but after the performances of Bryson, Morikawa and JT, Rory is not an automatic top-5. He has yet to have a top-10 since the return after the pandemic break, but has looked as strong as ever without a finished product. He has three previous top-10's at the Memorial, including a 4th place. He is a former Open champion and is a slightly higher price than recent weeks. It is time for him to strike.
Justin Rose was the 2010 Memorial champion and lost out in a playoff in 2015. Coupled with this with the fact that he is Open runner-up and 50/1 looks unbelievable value. We can write off his missed cut even though his form looked abject. Rose is a proven consistent performer and loves playing this tournament. He will bounce back this week.
Matt Kuchar won here in 2013 and was a runner-up in 2011 and has three other top-10 finishes. He clearly loves playing this event and put in a solid effort last week in the Workday event. He was a runner-up in the Open three years ago and his current price represents serious value. Kuch is still a player and can show that this week.
As a former Open Champion from five years ago in St Andrews, it was strange to see Zach Johnson at a big three-figure price. He doesn't always play this event and has not got impressive previous form but hasn't missed a cut here in the last decade and was tied-31st last week with some flashes of his old form. He goes well at this time of year and should perform this week.
As this weeks longshot, Haotong Li is a massive price for a guy with big potential and great scrambling game. That talent will come in this week as the tour is likely to toughen up the course compared to last week. He finished third in the Open three years ago and was tied-37th in his only previous visit here. There is a sneaking suspicion that he can sneak into contention at Muirfield Village this week.
