This week is the first instalment of the FedEx Cup with a full field of the top 125 players in the standings. TPC Boston is the host course for the Northern Trust event, but this course was famously associated with a previous FedEx playoff event, the old Deutsche Bank Championship. So, form at the latter event which was last played in 2018 is more relevant. So, the fact that Patrick Reed is defending this title is not a s relevant as normal. Bryson was the last winner at this venue in 2018 and is favourite based on this, followed by other previous Boston winners, JT and Rory. The top of the market does not look as strong as it appears and the winner may lie further down.
The list of winners at TPC Boston points to a profile of a player who is long and straight off the day. Tony Finau is that sort of player. Much has been made of Tony’s failure to land big titles, but his breakthrough is likely to come at an event that is more prestigious than a standard tournament. He has finished in the top-5 at Boston before and his current form is ultra-consistent. His price is probably fair and this is the sort of venue where he can put his Sunday woes to bed.
Justin Rose looks an overpriced player this week. Sure, he is well down the FedEx Cup standings but this is a former FedEx Cup winner and has won playoff events in the past. He has top-10 performances here at TPC Boston and has the long game to compete. Moreover, he needs a big week to make it to the BMW Championship next week. His 9th place at the PGA shows that he still has the quality.
Current US Open champion, Gary Woodland, is another who is at an attractive price. His form has come in flashes since the return of golf post-lockdown. However, he hasn’t quite put four good rounds together. This week could change that as he has a solid record at this venue and needs a good week to get back into the top-30 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Finally, we are going with Jason Kokrak as this week’s outsider. As Kokrak has a previous top-10 at Boston and is starting to show us some form with a solid showing at the Wyndham, his price is surely way too big. Keep an eye on Jason to go close this week.
