We are in Detroit Golf Club, Michigan, this week for the second version of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The venue is a something of a classic, tree-lined Donald Ross design. This standard par-72 is a composite course measuring over 7,300 yards hosted the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic when late entry, Nate Lashley, stormed to resounding victory at 25 under par. There is a strong expectation that the scoring will be low again this week on poa annua/bentgrass mix greens that will likely be heavily watered. A strong ball-striker with a hot putter will more than likely be the profile of the winner, but that doesn’t narrow the selections down a great deal, so it is something of a lottery picking the winner. After three weeks of world-class fields, this week’s group of players is a weaker collection with the chunky Bryson DeChambeau a clear favourite at a skinny price of around 6/1. Webb Simpson and Tyrrell Hatton are next in the market. Last year’s winner and top-five were massive prices, so offering some value needs to be considered.
There is one player near the top of the market that should be included. Viktor Hovland was striking the ball lovely at the Travelers Championship last week. If his putter had just heated up a small bit, he could have given DJ a run for his money. Nevertheless, Hovland is back at a venue which was his second only event as a professional last year and where he finished tied-13th last year. Viktor also has serious form on Donald Ross courses with a 4th place finish at Sedgefield last year in the Wyndham. Impressive recent form and a liking for the course is a combination worth getting involved with this week.
Another player who likes Donald Ross courses is last year’s Wyndham Championship winner, JT Poston. The Postman went bogey-free for the whole event at Sedgefield and was also tied-11th here in Detroit last year. Apart from last week’s missed cut, his recent form since the break has been strong, so it was easy to put him up as a betting option.
Last week, we saw an impressive in the form of Brandt Snedeker. He made some silly double bogeys but was striking it much better. He is a former winner of the Wyndham and was tied-5th here last year. He loves poa annua greens and his improved form will only increase this week.
Adam Hadwin has had some reasonably solid form since the return to golf following the pandemic. He rallied well after a bad start in Colonial and is ranked as one of the best putters on the tour. This week’s event will be something of a birdie-fest which is something Hadwin can compete in. He has shot 59 before on tour and has gone well more than once at the low-scoring Amex event in La Quinta. Expect something similar this week.
Chris Kirk is a man who has been battling some personal demons recently, but these seem to be behind him as he won on the Korn Ferry Tour two weeks ago with a score of 26 under par. He is a former world top-20 player and 4-time winner on the PGA Tour. He is on his way back to those heights.
Finally, there are two players who are at three-figure prices this week who are worth consideration. Patton Kizzire started playing some quality golf again last week after a string of missed cuts. He is a player who plays well in phases and has won before after posting an impressive top-10 the previous week. Similarly, Peter Uihlein is starting to show some promising form with a tied-14th at Colonial and a decent showing on the Korn Ferry Tour. The former US Amateur champion and son of Titleist owner can go close if the putter behaves.
