The PGA Tour 2019-20 season only ended two days ago with DJ putting on a commanding front-running display to take the $15 million FedEx cash. We are straight back into it again for the new 50-event season which will include six majors. It promises to be one of the most exciting seasons ever and it all starts on the West Coast tomorrow at the Safeway Open at Silverado Golf Club. Most of the top players will use this week to get practice for the US Open, but we have some big names present who are eager to get some competitive rounds in advance of the test at Winged Foot. Si-Woo Kim is remarkably edging favouritism along with Jordan Spieth, Shane Lowry and Sergio Garcia. Cameron Champ will not be defending due to his participation at East Lake, but there are others at the top of the market worth considering.
Phil Mickelson may have turned 50 earlier in the summer, but that has not stopped his winning ways. Lefty won his debut start on the Champions Tour last month and he can bring those good feelings to Silverado this week. Mickelson likes to play full competitive golf in advance of a major and he has three top10's here in the last five years. This will be ideal prep for the US Open next week and his chance at getting the career Grand Slam.
Luke List is a player who is long off the tee and also has good recent form. Recent winners of this event have all been excellent drivers of the golf ball. He won on the Korn Ferry Tour earlier in the summer and has shown some PGA Tour form too. He also was t-4th here in 2018, so is shaping like a great prospect.
Charl Schwartzel has battled injuries and form over the last few years. However, he looked back to his best at the 3M Open recently and he has a sixth-placed finish in his only previous appearance here. He looks overpriced given these facts.
Another with good recent form is Cameron Tringale. The Californian native made the FedEx Cup Playoffs comfortably and was also going well at the 3M Open. He has been solid here in the past and can go even better this week.
Troy Merritt has shown very strong form this summer, most notably when just missing out on winning at the Barracuda Championship. He also looks overpriced at a course where he was t-4th in 2018.
Our last selection is another overpriced contender. Nick Watney has had a tumultuous summer after contracting Covid-19, but he still managed a t-12th place at the 3M Open and was t-10th at the Safeway Open last year.
