The Shriners Hospital for Children Open is this week's event on the PGA Tour in what is the first part of a two-part Vegas Swing. TPC Summerlin is once again the host for this competitive affair in the desert, which boasts one of its best-ever fields with at least 12 of the top-30 players in the world. Newly-crowned US Open Champion and former winner, Bryson DeChambeau, is the clear favourite with course specialists, Webb Simpson and Patrick Cantlay, close behind. Kevin Na will try to defend the title he won here last year when he had one of the best putting displays ever. This event can be something of a birdie-fest, but when it is windy it is a very tricky course. The weekend looks like it could be breezy, so expect some fast starters and a grind on the weekend.
With this in mind, the headline selection is Abraham Ancer. Ancer has a tied-4th here from 2018 and has been in great form at stages since the lockdown. He should have probably won at the Heritage in June and was solid through the FedEx Playoffs. At his current price, he is overvalued.
Cameron Davis is a player in serious form at the moment. His 62 last Saturday at the Sanderson bore witness to the potential of this sweet-swinging Aussie. He won the Australian Open a couple of years ago on a dry blustery course and Vegas should be right up his alley.
Denny McCarthy delivered an each-way payout last week with a tied-6th at the Sanderson last week and was 9th here last year. He is the same price this week which I think is a little offensive because he can go well again.
Pat Perez loves playing in Vegas with a 3rd place and a t-7th in the last few years. His recent form has also improved given his top-10 at the Safeway Open. He has won in the desert before and can do it again at a huge price.
Our two outsiders this week are Tom Hoge and Xinjun Zhang. Hoge has been solid over the last couple of months and probably deserved at least a top-10 at the Wyndham. He has been 7th here before in 2017 and is poised to go well again. Zhang was T-16th here on his debut last year and has two top-15's in the last few weeks. He is ready to make that leap into real PGA Tour contender this week.
