So, we have finally got to the end of the most disrupted PGA Tour season in living memory. It's the final leg of the FedEx Cup, the Tour Championship at East Lake County Club in Atlanta. After our fourth winning selection of the year, we are something of a roll going into this week. The format of this week's tournament is unique in that a handicap is given to each player whereby Dustin Johnson starts at ten under par, two shots ahead of second-placed Jon Rahm. It is one of many convoluted systems to decide the FedEx Cup, but is probably the most straightforward (or best of a bad lot). The Top 5 in the market are very strong but our first port of call is the group on 4 under par.
The headline selection for this week is Bryson DeChamebeau. East Lake is a Donald Ross-designed course and Bryson is a man who plays well on Donald Ross courses, as witnessed by his win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit Golf Club. Admittedly, Bryson needs to improve on his recent form but he is coming more under the radar than he has all summer. This reduction in pressure should allow him to unleash his new explosive style.
There are few other golfers in better form than Daniel Berger this summer. After winning at Colonial, he has had three other top-3 finishes. He has two previous solid appearances at East Lake with one round of 66. He is positioned and priced nicely and should go well.
Brendon Todd is playing a home game this week. He lives about 15 miles from the course, so will be sleeping in his own bed. He has some excellent form this year and hits tons of fairways and greens with a great short game, which is what is required at East Lake this week.
Tyrrell Hatton is a gritty competitor who has already won on a tough course with Bermuda greens this season. His victory at the Arnold Palmer represented a step up for Hatton and he is ready to progress further and perform nicely this week.
East Lake will feel like a home for Kevin Kisner also this week. He went to school in Georgia and lives up the highway in South Carolina. He has some serious impressive form at East Lake which includes a top-3 finish. He is coming from a long way back but can do the business.
Two guys who are starting at level par and are distinct long shots are Billy Horschel and Mackensie Hughes. Both only made it into this week on the final green last Sunday. Horschel is a former winner here and has a second-place in 2018 along with another top-10, so he will relish this week and can close the big gap. Meanwhile, Mac Hughes has been in great form since February and all through the summer. Hughes played great at the Honda which is a tough test on Bermuda greens and will thrive at East Lake.
