It may be three months late, but the US Open will start tomorrow at Winged Foot Golf Club, Mamaroneck, New York. This is a hotly anticipated major at an iconic par-70 AW Tillinghast-designed course which stretches to over 7,400 yards.Winged Foot last hosted the US Open in 2006 when Geoff Ogilvy was last man standing with a winning score of five-over par. With narrow fairways, thick rough and scary greens, this week's renewal should be as tough. The weather is also set to be cooler and breezy from Friday which should make it an even greater challenge. As expected, DJ is the strong favourite after his FedEx Cup victory followed by Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas. A good short game will be very important this week as everyone will miss fairways and greens at some point. Also, getting the better of the weather may be important on the first two days, so a draw of late Thursday-early Friday would be favourable given current weather forecasts.
The headline selection this week is Tommy Fleetwood. Tommy has looked like a major champion-in-waiting since 2017 when he came 4th to Koepka when the US Open was at Erin Hills. He went even closer at Shinnecock in 2018 when he shot 63 in the final round to finish runner-up to Koepka again. He also was runner-up to Shane Lowry at Portrush, so his major pedigree is there. After his Sunday 65 at the Portugal Masters last week, we now know his form is now heading for top gear. Winged Foot will suit his shot-making style with a natural draw favouring many holes. His short game looks sound and this could be his week.
Hideki Matsuyama is another player whose game is coming to the boil nicely for this week's challenge. He showed some flashes of brilliance during the FedEx Playoffs, especially at the BMW. He likes to play well on Tillinghast-designed courses given his 4th place showing at the 2016 PGA at Baltusrol. He looks poised to break his and Asia's major duck.
One player who has guaranteed major championship stock is Louis Oosthuizen. The former Open champion has lost two majors in playoffs and has a Grand Slam of runner-up finishes. His current form is really good with steadily rising performances in the FedEx finale. His price looks a bit big given these factors.
Phil Mickelson knows all about Winged Foot and the elation and heartbreak it can bring. Back in 2006, Phil needed a par on the last to win his first US Open. After driving into a hospitality tent, he eventually ran up a double bogey and missed out on a playoff, handing the title to Ogilvy. Nevertheless, his short game skills are still there and if he can build on a solid showing last week at the Safeway Open, then he can contend again.
Last season was a stellar one for Joaquin Niemann. He started the first event with a win at the Greenbrier and was impressive at the end in the Playoffs. He has yet to show this standard of play at the majors, but this week could be the start of it. He has a natural draw and a great short game and won't be afraid to handle this challenge given his recent confident play.
Chez Reavie showed his form of last season and the Playoffs is still going strong at the Safeway Open last week. A fast-finishing tied-3rd last week show his game is ticking along nicely. His best major finish was at last year's US Open when he was t-3rd. He hits a lot of fairways and greens and needs to keep that up to be a contender.
Will Zalatoris is leading the way on the Korn Ferry Tour at the moment. An exquisite ball-striker who is contending to win almost every week is the profile we want this week. He can make the step up this week.
Our two outsiders this week are fellow Frenchmen. Romain Langassque is a recent winner on the European Tour and a former Amateur Champion on a similarly formidable Carnoustie course. Expect him to show he is a big-time player this week. Mike Lorenzo-Vera got a taste for the majors at the PGA last month when he was in the mix on the weekend. He has the game to grind out a performance.
