It is a busy week of competitive golf this week. The big event is the WGC Fedex St Jude Invitational at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. This is the second year that the course has hosted the event after its move from Firestone in Ohio. All the big names are present for this event which could serve as a dry run for the first major of the year at the PGA next week. Newly-crowned World Number One, Jon Rahm, is just about edging favourtism with Rory and JT followed close behind. Conditions will be hot and humid this week on Bermuda greens where bombers have a tendency to do well. Shorter hitters who are good mid-iron players can also do well, but players who are focused on this week and not looking to peak next week will go well.
The headline selection this week is a former WGC winner, Xander Schauffele. While Xander has only one previous visit here last year when he finished T-27th, he has such strong form in this type of small-field invitational event. He has won in Shanghai, Maui and also the Tour Championship in 2017. These are all small-field, no-cut events and he has thrived on them. He may or may not be a major champion-in-waiting but he is more than capable of showing his best stuff this week.
Matt Wallace is a player with eye-catching, progressive form. He has played solidly in the last month, culminating in a T-4th place at the Memorial. He looks very comfortable in the States at the moment and looks to have that hunger he had a couple of years ago when he won four times on the European Tour. He's at a great price for this week.
There are two guys at 100/1 this week who should go well. Brendon Todd is a two-time winner this year and has gone well here in Memphis and has gone well since the pandemic break. He has a top-5 finish at the St Jude a few years ago and obviously should have won at the Travelers last month. He is a big price for a player in this form. Phil Mickelson has great form at the St Jude with four top-10's in the last five years and is showing flashes of what made him great.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout has had a number of solid top-30 finishes on the PGA Tour both pre and post-lockdown and is a proven winner on the European Tour. This might be a step too far, but his progression has been too strong to ignore. Finally, we go with Tennessee-native, Brandt Snedeker, as our outsider. He will be eager to impress his local fans and has strong previous form on this track.
