After Bryson bombed and putted his way to victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, the PGA Tour rumbles on to a one-time only event called the Workday Charity Open. This is the first of two back-to-back events at Jack Nicklaus’ course at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. This event replaces the John Deere Classic which could not take place this year because of COVID-restrictions. Jack’s own Memorial invitational event will be played over the same course (on different tees) next week, but this week will be a full 156-player field. There is a stronger look to this week’s event with JT, Brooks, Rose and Xander all back to compete. Obviously, previous course form is a major positive this week and there are some value options.
Our headline selection on the PGA Tour is leading Japanese player, Hideki Matsuyama. Hideki is a world-class ball-striker and a former Memorial winner on this course. His putting has probably been the weakest part of his game, but that showed signs of serious improvement if last Saturday’s 65 in Detroit is anything to go by. His course is undoubted and his current form is bubbling up nicely. He has a hunger to get back to the top of the game and this week could be that first step back.
Rickie Fowler is another player whose game has dipped in and out of form in the last year. He has a new coach and the changes to his swing are starting to bed down and he finished well in Detroit last week. His two runner-up Memorial finishes show he loves playing here and his form improvement should ramp up this week.
Bubba Watson has had a form drop in the last couple of weeks with back-to-back cuts. He can be forgiven because of his charity work that may have distracted him. He has been third-laced at the Memorial in the past and is overpriced at the moment since he only had a top-10 three weeks ago.
Emiliano Grillo has had four impressive appearances at the Memorial in the last few years, which include a T-9th last year. His form has been somewhat average since the pandemic break, but he started well in last week’s first round with a 66
and also started well at the Travelers. He can put four rounds together this week.
Patrick Rodgers is another player who looks somewhat undervalued as he has a tied-8th here in 2018. He has also shown some signs of form when he finished just outside the top-10 at Colonial. He goes well at this time of year since he was runner-up at the John Deere in the past. There is a sneaking suspicion that this could be a big week for him.
Our final PGA Tour pick is Pat Perez. This selection is not one based on recent form, but more coming from his previous appearances at Muirfield Village. He didn’t miss the cut here at all last decade and has a top-10 finish. He looked frustrated in the appearances he made on TV, but looks keen to come back to his best form.
