Before discussion moves to this week’s stop on the PGA Tour at the Wyndham Championship, it must be acknowledged that last week was a spectacularly successful week at the PGA Championship. Collin Morikawa was put forward as the second selection last week with a great deal of confidence and he delivered in memorable fashion. His driving of the green on the 16th will live long in the memory and DJ’s second place capped a rare forecast. This week, we are at the Donald Ross-designed Sedgefield for the Wyndham Championship which will decide the top 125 players that make the FedEx Cup Playoffs. There’s a lot on the line for some players with big names like Sergio Garcia and Shane Lowry on the outside looking in. Previous course form is a big factor, but recent performances will be a consideration also. Webb Simpson is a deserved favourite this week given he is rarely out of the top-3 at this event. Brooks Koepka is second in the market with Paul Casey, Patrick Reed and Justin Rose also near the top. This event normally delivers tons of birdies, so a streaky player can do very well.
Our headline selection is on a good streak of his own after an impressive weekend performance at the PGA Championship. He was five-under for the weekend at Harding Park on a course that wasn’t considered to suit him. This week’s track is right up his alley as his previous top-10 performances attest to. He loves Bermuda greens and Donald Ross courses and will be a big factor this week. The money has already come for him earlier in the week, so get stuck in.
Billy Horschel is another who loves it around Sedgefield. He performed well here last year and was top-10 in 2018. He has had a solid season without really going close, but this week could change all that.
Chris Kirk is a player on a comeback trail. He seems to put his personal demons to rest for now and is playing some great golf. This week’s venue will suit him and he can pile on the birdies.
Branden Grace was going well in his last event at the Barracuda when he was diagnosed with Covid-19. He has shaken that off in time to battle his way into the playoffs and he can go well.
Denny McCarthy has had a solid season so far, but got covid-19 at the Travelers after the return from lockdown. Since he shook that off, he has trended upwards and was in good form at the PGA last week. He looks good to go at a tasty price.
Mark Hubbard is currently 42nd in the Fedex Cup standings and went well to finish tied-12th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic on a Donald Ross course. He looks overpriced for a guy who has such a solid season.
Seamus Power needs a top-4 finish to make the FedEx playoffs but he was in super form at the Barrracuda two weeks ago when he finished 9th. He needs to go very well and has the form to do that.
Finally, we are taking Matt Every as a big outsider. The two-time Arnold Palmer winner has had a highly erratic season but he has gone well before on his preferred Bermuda greens.
