This week’s instalment of the PGA Tour sees the second edition of the ZOZO Championship. Last year’s inaugural event in Japan was a massive success with Tiger reaching 82 PGA tour victories. Due to COVID, this year’s event will happen at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California. The event is a limited 78-man field with no cut, so is also a good event for those playing Draft Kings. Jon Rahm is the favourite in the market, followed closely by JT and Rory. This course has thrown winners of differing styles with Tiger winning many times while shorter, more accurate players like Jim Furyk, Graeme McDowell and Zach Johnson have been successful also. A strong wedge game seems to be a big factor and an ability to be accurate off the tee seem to be big advantages.
Patrick Cantlay is clearly a top player, but his form has been uneven recently. He looked like he could easily win at the Shriners going into the last round two weeks ago, but had a poor final day. That indifferent form continued into the early round last week, but he finished with a 67 on Sunday and is too good not to come back to his best. He loves playing Jack Nicklaus courses like this one and this former Memorial winner is back in his home state. He is overpriced at the moment and will go close.
Abraham Ancer came through for a nice each-way payout two weeks ago at the Shriners and he can do similar, if not better, at the ZOZO this week. This course requires accuracy and Ancer is very much a “fairways and greens” player. He is overdue a win on the PGA Tour and this could be the week.
Another player who fits the profile of a potential winner is Brendon Todd, who won twice towards the end of last year. He is highly accurate, if short, off the tee but hits lots of green and has become a formidable putter. He has been in contention a lot over the summer and is taken to keep that trend going.
Justin Rose has fallen down the rankings in the last year, which is strange for such a consistent player. This former major winner has played this course back in the Tiger World Challenge days and is far too big a price for the class that he has. He showed glimpses of this early at Wentworth and a return to form is expected.
The former No.1 amateur in the world, Takumi Kanaya, turned professional a few weeks ago and this is his first foray into the PGA Tour. He has won on the Japan Tour in his amateur days along with finishing top-3 at the Australian Open. The transition to the paid ranks may not be straightforward but he could be a star in the making.
Finally, an outside bet option is given for Jazz Janewattananond to show that he has pedigree. He got into the world’s Top 50 on the back of performances in Asia and showed his mettle at the Irish Open. Hopefully, he can go well this week
